What began as a home roaster in a George Town apartment is now a dedicated roastery — and the journey is just beginning.

The Beginning

A hobby that became an obsession.

In 2019, Daniel Tan bought a small drum roaster on a whim while working as a software engineer in Kuala Lumpur. He spent every weekend reading roast profiles, cupping coffees in his apartment kitchen, and filling his wardrobe with 200g sample bags from every importer he could find.

By 2021, the hobby had outgrown the apartment. He moved the roaster to a proper workshop in George Town, started selling bags at the weekend market, and quit his job the following year to commit fully to Aroma.

The name came naturally. Great coffee has an aroma — that first rush of fragrance when you crack open a fresh bag, the bloom of hot water over grounds, the steam rising from a perfect espresso. Aroma is everything we care about, distilled into one word.

What We Stand For

Three things we refuse to compromise on.

Direct Trade

We travel to origin at least once a year. We know the farmers, see the processing methods, and pay above Fairtrade minimums. Our green costs are published. No mystery.

Small-Batch Roasting

Every roast is profiled by hand on our 6kg drum. We roast twice a week — Tuesdays and Fridays — and ship the same day. Your coffee is never more than a few days off roast.

Radical Transparency

Roast dates, cupping scores, farm-gate prices, processing methods — we share everything. You deserve to know exactly what you are drinking and where it came from.

The Roastery

A 12kg drum. Two roast days a week. Zero compromise.

Our roastery is a converted warehouse unit in the heart of George Town. The 12kg Probat drum that sits at its centre is nothing special to look at — but the coffee that comes out of it is. Every roast is watched, smelt, and tasted by Daniel, who logs each profile and adjusts based on weekly cuppings.

We do not roast speculatively. We roast to order where possible. The beans you receive have been roasted within the past 72 hours. We print the roast date on every bag.
